mad craftin’

We have this room downstairs. It’s kind of like a basement and has become the catch all for everything that has no place in the house. I was finally inspired to clean it out last week, in an effort to create a kind of studio space.  It’s definitely not cute and just kind of pieced together with what I had… but everything now kind of has a place.

before (GROSS!)

after

I’m actually really digging my lockers that I scored at the state surplus, now a vibrant Longhorn orange (hook ‘em) (sorry, I’ve been watching too much Friday Night Lights on Netflix and I am totally into football for the first time in my life–just when I leave Texas).

I was actually able to put my new “studio” to use for the first time with a few simple projects. I’ve been so uninspired to create anything with fabric this summer, so I had to go back to the real basics and make some good old bandana pants for Bird. The boys were jealous of her new threads so we had to dig up two of their new school t-shirts and have some freezer paper stencil fun.

And now (to make this post even longer…) I have to tell you a story. Bird was totally obsessed with a strange video on YouTube about a cat named Burger and Fries. He’s super mad because he has the stupidest name for a cat. Ever. For months and month, every time we turned on the computer she asked to see Mad Kitty. I couldn’t check my email without watching this loathsome video. What made it even worse, is that it became a game in which my kids all tried to act like mad kitties. The noise generated was something on par with real cats in heat. seriously.awful. Anyway, Mad Kitty kind of took on celebrity status in our house and that’s how my new label was born. I can see a faint glimmer of  Mad Kitty’s name in stars (just please don’t call it Burger and Fries).

Here’s the video, but be leery of showing it to your toddlers for fear Mad Kitty will take over your life.

  1. such hard work it must have been ! but this room was calling your name for a creative space, wasn’t it ?!!
these lockers are so hyp. they cost a fortune on home decoration catalogs here in France !
your freezer paper stencils are amazing ! i love them all mad cat included ! i’ve never managed to make one and convinced myself it was because the paper was not good enough !!
all our family saw this video the other day, along with some other hilarious cat videos, and almost peed in our pants !!! little devils we are, we also pushed the volume up to see how our kitties would react to these furious meows !
have a great weekend Jenny — cool rainy weather is expected here and I’ve cut a trenchcoat (very ambitious isn’t it ?!!)for L. + I have some (hand) binding to do…

    1. A trenchcoat! Wow. That does sound ambitious, but if anyone can do it, it’s you! I really scored on the lockers. I paid $5 a piece for them! They were in pretty bad shape, but the spray paint worked wonders :) I hope you get some sunny weather soon. Stinks that summer is nearly over.

    1. It is sad! I guess I have just been desensitized to it after seeing it ten thousand times!

  3. I love what you did with your unused/pile up room. I would love someone with an “eye” to suggest organization strategies and color schemes, for spots in my home, and then I’d be off and running! We never really moved in well here (my brother and dad passing and then the grief, depression etc etc) so we’ve been “settling” with ugly wall color in our main living space and clutter without a good system for controlling it all. On the one hand I love that 1300 sq feet is easy to clean, but OTOH I would LOVE a room to turn into a place to create in/retreat to when I needed that space!

You did a smashing job! Very inspiring.

Love the freezer stencilling; it looks fun…willing to do a tutorial?? ;-)

    1. All in good time, eh? It seems like it has taken us a long time to settle into this place, too. There have been more important things to do, like being outside :)

And as for the freezer paper tutorial, I read about it in the Creative Family book by Amanda Soule, and Angry Chicken has a tutorial on her blog, too (http://angrychicken.typepad.com/angry_chicken/2006/03/little_elf_shir.html). It’s REALLY easy, and totally addicting. They hardest part is cutting out your designs. I usually just draw freehand or trace a picture right onto the freezer paper and then cut it out with an exacto. I hope you do it!

  4. Oh, thanks Jenny for the reminder. I have Creative Family here on my desk! I can couple that with the blog tutorial and maybe do this for Brendan’s birthday party. Dads and mamas can do the exacto part ;-)
