valentine’s day love

I’m not really a Valentine’s Day girl, but I do love a good sunset. And a good meal (and chocolate and flowers!).  And the color red is pretty fabulous, too. On second thought, Valentine’s Day just may be the perfect holiday! I spent a lovely day with my family. Watching the sunset on the beach and doing some silly pink and red crafting and eating lots of sugar. Since a fancy date was not an option, Brian and I put the kids to bed early and made a most amazing Indian feast. Chicken in cashew sauce, curried coconut cauliflower and even homemade naan. So.Good. Can’t wait for lunchtime leftovers.

The sky was full of love for the occasion.

The British Soldiers are going nuts out in the sun right now. I love the perfect red bursts in an otherwise not-very-colorful month.

Getting ready for dinner… finally getting a chance to use our bull kelp chutney from Simple Pleasures (we made a trade at Public Market, my print for her jellies, and we’ve been LOVING all of the amazing Alaska flavors).

I have been seeing some amazing photos of the Northern Lights from last night! We didn’t ever see them out here, but I did see Mars glowing the brightest red I’ve ever seen, I think just for Valentine’s Day. Hope yours was full of love.

  1. your day sounded perfect, surrounded by family and outdoors and then in to make indian food. it’s been so long since we actually cooked full-on indian. i love the flavours; i think i was south east asian in another life. or two. i must amke a date to pull out the vikram vij book. i’ve never tried eating bull kelp yet i was just thinking as the boys whipped them out to the ocean one after the other last week, that they must be delicious somehow. all of this amazing food that the ocean provides and i know it is a popular one to eat. have you tried other local seaweeds?

i love these photos, so full and rich with that ever-returning light. xo

  2. bull kelp chutney sounds really good. it seems so wonderful to me that you alaskans simply make with what you have…and the results must be so lively and rich! your valentines day sounds so good…grounding, mellow, warm.
we have been eating a fair amount of indian lately, made at home. on one of our last trips to the indian market the man behind the counter recommended these masala packs that you can roast meats with to make curries. we’ve tried a few and they are REALLY GOOD. i should send you one to try…i think you’d like it.
enjoy the return of the light. it won’t be too long now.
